NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — This isn’t music to anyone’s ears: The restoration of a church’s 130-year-old organ has been delayed because four delicate pipes were damaged when a visitor napped on them.

The 18-foot pipes were among about 50 stored in the basement at First Churches in Northampton during the sanctuary’s renovation.

The Rev. Peter Ives estimates the damage at close to $15,000. But he says the organ can be played without the pipes. Ives says the church will not press charges.

The man apparently mistook the pipes for rolled-up rugs and slept on them. He is a homeless man who was in the church for a job counseling meeting.

The congregation traces its history to the 17th century, and was home to 18th century preacher Jonathan Edwards.

Seattle’s Beloved Tuba Man Silenced

I took this photo I called “Tuba Dude” as a candid on August 17, 2007 while out photowalking along the Magnolia bluffs, so if it looks familiar, it’s because you saw it here (original post). I saw this lone figure playing his tuba. After a time I walked around to his other side to see if I might get a shot from the front, and he noticed me at a distance and acknowledged my presence with a very warm smile and a nod “Hi!” and resumed playing to the Puget Sound. I had no idea who he was, but on hearing his very able chops thought he was possibly a local orchestra musician. Seemed a very normal and charming thing to play one’s horn to the Puget Sound. My husband often took his sax to the marina near our house in Berkeley after work and played to the bay and the sunset in the open air like this. Maybe its just a musician thing. I didn’t want to disturb him further, so didn’t take that second shot. A photo friend seeing this shot shortly after I took it commented that wasn’t this Seattle’s “Tuba Man” that he often saw busking outside of sporting events? Ah, yes, that’s him, someone else confirmed. A beloved Seattle character familiar to thousands (except me). Several months later I was at my mom’s when she was watching a television program in which his story was featured. His name is Ed McMichael. I learned that he’s sort of a Seattle legend: everyone knows and loves him. After just one beautiful smile and “Hi!” from him, I could see why. Yesterday I learned that this gentle, sweet musician had been beaten and robbed by 5 youths on Mercer Street on October 25. He was treated at Harborview Hospital and released two days later to go home under the care of his brother. He passed away in his sleep early November 4th due to his injuries. He is remembered fondly by a city to which he gave so many happy moments and years of musical joy and friendliness.

There will be an informal gathering outside of McCaw Hall this Saturday morning at 11 AM at which all musicians who would like to play in memory of Ed may join in the playing of Taps, Tequila and the University of Washington Fight Song. I have a feeling it will be quite a tribute orchestra.

i was reading concerning athletes perturbed about barack obama’s victory form night and caught a quote that genuinely shows that there are athletes who care more about banknotes and “bling.”

The quote comes from Kris Jenkins, a defensive tackle for the New York Jets.

“i can’t be self-aggrandizing ample to think about keeping all of my simoleons and fitting being in a better cess category because i have to be dependable that i do my part for the treatment of the world to be a well-advised b wealthier place for my kids,” he said.

Jenkins’ quote followed two others in that piece from golfer Boo Weekley and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. Allen’s quote gives you an idea of why he voted for John McCain:

For the record, Allen signed with Minnesota this off-season for big money. Actually, huge money. He signed a six-year deal worth $74 million, $31 million of which is guaranteed.

It really amazes me how active athletes got during this election. This was a rare sight for me as both a fan of politics and sports.

the mlb network has been surfing the local penchant leisure pool and they’ve added despite it another individual to its growing roster. it was announced yesterday that longtime padres broadcaster matt vasgersian was leaving the team and today he’s signed on with the mlb-n. via john ourand at sbd….mlb network is about to make its first official on-air hire, signing matt vasgersian as its main studio host for the every night “mlb tonight” show, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. vasgersian had been the lead play-by-play announcer for padres’ tv games and has done work with fox, as well. as the major host of mlb network’s bedtime show, vasgersian will be the net’s most visible on-air personality. an official advertisement could come as soon as tomorrow.mlb network is launching january 1 to more 50 million homes. it has beentalking with harold reynolds and hazel mae helter-skelter on-air positions and hashad conversations with bob costas about an on-air role.it’s not costas but it’s still a good pickup for the new network that launches january 1st. they look as if to be making all of the real moves before opening up blow the whistle on buy, and this is just another occupied c proceeding that illustrates that. i’ve fancy been a nut of vasgersian, and the studio work he put in for the olympics will definitely helpers him in this r”le.mlb network to open matt vasgersian (broadcasting & cable)
